The First Step: Y School’s Website Launch

The Y is part of the global YMCA movement, supporting communities for more than 170 years. As a not-for-profit organisation, it delivers a diverse range of services including early learning, youth programs, recreation, aquatics, community health and alternative education. With a strong focus on empowering young people and strengthening local communities, The Y reinvests all revenue into programs and facilities that create safe, inclusive and engaging environments across the country.
Within this network, YMCA Whittlesea (The Y Whittlesea) plays a vital role in Melbourne’s north. Serving the City of Whittlesea and surrounding areas, it delivers community-based programs spanning health and fitness, aquatics, youth services, early learning and education. Among its most impactful initiatives is Y School, an alternative education program designed for young people who thrive in flexible, supportive learning environments.
The Challenge
The brief was to create a purpose-built digital presence that reflected the school’s student-centred approach. The new website needed to establish credibility, build trust with families and referral partners, clearly articulate the school’s point of difference, and align with The Y’s broader brand ecosystem.
This website marked the first step in a wider digital transformation for YMCA Whittlesea, laying the foundation for a scalable, consistent web framework across multiple services.
Strategy & Approach
We began with in-depth discovery sessions to define the school’s core messaging, priority user groups and enrolment pathways. From there, we developed a clear, intuitive information architecture focused on user needs, particularly enabling parents and carers to quickly understand eligibility, available support services and next steps.
The design balances The Y’s established brand identity with accessible layouts, clear typographic hierarchy, and authentic imagery. The website was built with a flexible framework to support all Y Whittlesea sites, ensuring brand consistency, accessibility compliance, and streamlined content management across the organisation.
The Y School website (yschool.vic.edu.au) is now live, forming the foundation of a broader redevelopment program that will include Inclusion Services, Children’s Programs, Leisure City, and the Whittlesea site. Together, these sites will create a cohesive, user-centred digital ecosystem, enhancing brand alignment, improving community access to services, and supporting long-term growth.
